Well, of course it is, that’s the point of the whole thing. Now, with all the resources at hand and all the temptations abound, how do you shop like a successful person?
1. Differentiate your needs versus your wants
Yes, this is an old adage but one that holds well against the changes throughout time. Normal, less financially savvy people, tend to splurge on things they want when they have the money. But financially savvy individuals? No.
What to do is to differentiate your needs versus your wants. Buy and pay for all the things you need before indulging yourself. Remember that paying yourself doesn’t mean buying every single thing you want, but, making sure that you’ve got yourself and your loved ones taken care of.
After all, what use do you have for fancy jewelry if your house just got its electricity cut off?
2. Invest on long lasting items.
We don’t blame you. With the advent of fast and cheap fashion, it’s easy to decide to buy a $30 dress over a $60 one. After all, they’re the same thing right?
No.
Think of it as an investment. You are your greatest investment and your clothes should be as well. Look over the $30 dress again. How long do you think it’ll hold? Does the stitching look like it’ll survive countless washings? Is the style timeless?
If it’s not, then better put that back in the rack. Invest in items that will last the test of time and are versatile enough to be styled in multiple ways. Don’t let your fashion sense suffer, but refine it to the point that it needs less than more.
3. Buy with cash.
“If you can’t afford to pay it in cash, then you can’t afford it at all.” Is a smart rule to follow when shopping.
This allows you to budget your money before heading out the door. Credit’s nice and good but it provides the illusion of unlimited resources.
By comparison, when paying with cash you literally feel the money moving away from you, thus making you more aware of how much you spend.
All in all, to shop like a successful person, keep it in mind that you are one. Get to shopping and invest in yourself now!
