Knowing the best emergency facility to visit for a particular ailment or accident recovery is important if patients are to get the proper care leading to full recovery.
For people who have the time to plan their hospital stay whether that be for elective and required surgery, knowing something about the hospital and care given can make a difference between life and death…literally. To that end HealthGrades, an independent healthcare ratings organization has identified the 50 best hospitals in the United States with six of those located in the West Palm Beach, Florida area alone.
HealthGrades’ top hospitals are found in 28 cities in 19 states. These hospitals must have had risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates that were in the top 5% in the nation for the most consecutive years. On average, patients treated at these hospitals had a nearly 30 percent lower risk of death and 3 percent lower rate of complications. Based on these measurements, HealthGrades found that if all U.S. hospitals had performed at similar levels, more than 500,000 Medicare deaths could have been prevented between 1999 and 2009.
The HealthGrades survey revealed some surprising data including noting that 86 percent of the top hospitals are not-for-profit or local government entities. Some illnesses have a far better chance of being managed including pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with mortality rates 43.82 and 42.81 percent lower respectively.
To formulate its rankings, HealthGrades evaluated approximately 140 million Medicare patient records from 1999 to 2009 for 26 medical procedures and conditions.
