Welding Helmets Offering More Safety Features for Welders
  • Opening Intro -

Welders specialize in different fields based on the training that they go through.

-------------------------------------

They can do MIG, TIG and other types of welding like arc flash welding. Those who go through arc flash training and other types of programs learn exactly what to do on the job to stay safe and to keep those around them safe too. Students in these programs must have their own welding helmets before class starts. While some will want one that is basic and cheap, the newer helmets on the market some with some amazing safety features for welders.

Impact-Resistant Shell

One of the top safety features found on newer helmets is something called an impact-resistant shell. The shell is the exterior portion of the helmet. Manufacturers now use nylon and other materials to make this shell as durable as possible. If something falls off a shelf and hits it, the helmet will absorb the shock and keep the person wearing the helmet from feeling that strike. An impact-resistant shell offers some protection during slips and falls too because it absorbs the shock of the person’s head hitting the ground.

Auto Darkening

Professionals often tell beginners to invest in a helmet with an auto darkening feature. This is a feature the automatically darkens the lens to protect the wearer’s eyes from sparks. Welding produces sparks that can cause significant eye damage. Cheaper helmets require that welders change out the lenses based on the jobs they need to do. While newer helmets still let welders use different types of lenses, they can also use this feature to keep the eye area as dark as possible. Some newer designs will respond in a blink of an eye and darken in 1/25,000 of a second or faster.

Adjustable Design

Those who worked in the welding industry in the past know how uncomfortable some of the older helmets were. These products came in a one size fits all design that caused some discomfort, especially around the back of the head and along the neck. Manufacturers now offer helmets in different sizes and include adjustable features for an even better and more comfortable fit. Most have a strap that wraps around the back of the head and a second strap around the neck. Buckles allow wearers to adjust the fit based on their head sizes.

Exterior Controls and Buttons

While on the job, welders often need to make some basic adjustments as they move from job to job. They do not necessarily want to take off their helmets to make those changes, but some cheaper products still put the controls and buttons on the inside. To increase the safety of workers, some manufacturers now put those buttons on the outside of the helmet. Even while wearing thick or heavy gloves, a welder can rotate each knob and press the buttons to adjust the view seen from the inside and to make other changes.

Welding helmets are available with rechargeable batteries that charge in the sun and batteries that users can replace after a few years of use. The manufacturers of these helmets now offer safety features that keep workers safe on the job and as they go through training. Top features include an auto darkening design and buttons and controls on the outside of the shell.
