How to Save Money on Christmas Shopping

How to Save Money on Christmas Shopping
  • Opening Intro -

It is only October with Christmas still more than 10 weeks away. However, some stores began to assume a holiday persona over the Labor Day weekend.

Halloween may be on its way, Thanksgiving will quickly follow, but the Christmas shopping season will soon step up into high gear.

Christmas shopping savings galore.

Early shopping is nothing new as consumers long ago learned that sales are held throughout the year, not just at Christmas time. Christmas shoppers want bargains and, thanks to the Internet, have been able to track deals online. Black Friday may be popular with brick and mortar retailers, but the following Cyber Monday is the purvey of online stores.

You can save money on Christmas shopping this year by taking the following steps:

Cull your list — Has your Christmas shopping list been expanding nearly every year? Unless your immediate family is getting larger, you may want to rethink who gets what from you this year. Large families and groups have come up with a way to handle this problem — members get together before Christmas, usually at Thanksgiving, to choose a name out of a hat and buy a gift for that person only. Under this arrangement, everyone receives a gift, which is often based on a few suggestions that have been included with the recipient’s name. Save time, avoid being hassled and have fun shopping!

Stick with a budget — Plan to spend a certain amount on gifts this year and stick with your budget. Avoid charging anything, but if you must use credit cards, keep the amount charged within your limit. Pay off your cards instead of allowing interest to accumulate. Accumulating interest will quickly eat up the savings you enjoyed when shopping the sales.

Make it yourself — Why not put your talents to work by making gifts this year? If you can make it, then give it. Some examples include: dried flowering arranging, woodworking, baking and photography. Not every recipient needs to get a homemade gift, but give to those people who would appreciate something made by your hands.

Cash in your rewards — Have you been accumulating rewards points with your credit card, airline miles or other incentive plan? If so, consider cashing these in for gifts. Most definitely, many of these gifts are terribly overpriced for the points accumulated, but if the points are there, why not redeem them? You may find that some incentives, such as gift cards, are of better value than specific gifts.

Look for discount codes — If you’re buying online, the price you see on the website may not be the lowest one. Many retailer have discount codes, but you don’t have to be signed up to receive these. Instead, search for codes via Google by entering the name of the website and the words “discount code.” Once you find what you want, enter this information at check out, saving 5 to 20 percent or more on your purchases.

Chances are there will be many sales between now and Christmas. In years past, retailers slashed prices to move unsold inventory. This year, retailers may keep inventories lean, resulting in fewer sales or discounts not as deep. So, shop early and save those receipts, just in case a return needs to be made.
