Many of these consumers have found CBD to be a helpful supplement in regard to their mental health. Here’s how CBD can help mental health by managing various systems.
Depression
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression is one of the most common mental disorders within the US. Traditional treatment typically includes psychotherapy and medication that increases neural activity to increase the production of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
CBD supplements can aid with depression by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, the system that regulates the body’s natural processes. By interacting with endocannabinoid receptors, CBD can help the brain produce more serotonin when there’s a deficiency.
Anxiety
Anxiety is another common ailment that’s also a common symptom of depression.
CBD has been reported to help with anxiety as consumers find relaxation by reducing the amount of cortisol, a stress-inducing hormone that the system produces via the endocannabinoid system.
Reports of CBD use have been positive regarding managing anxiety, but it requires further study to examine the therapeutic and long-term effects of CBD.
PTSD
A mental disorder commonly associated with soldiers, PTSD is characterized by symptoms such as nightmares, intrusive thoughts, triggers that cause panic attacks, and re-experiencing traumatic events.
To help those suffering from PTSD, a therapist might use a technique called aversive memory extinction, a process in which the therapist helps a patient experience similar situations without the traumatic stimuli that trigger panic attacks.
So how can CBD help with mental health when the symptoms of PTSD often strike so suddenly and so harshly? Research into CBD has found CBD to be a useful aid in the way it helps with both anxiety and memory.
Insomnia
Because CBD is useful for helping people relax and de-stress, it’s no surprise that it can also help with sleep disorders such as insomnia. Sleep itself plays a massive role in our physical and mental well-being, so CBD, in this scenario, serves more as an aid to allow your body to improve its own mental health.
By reducing the production of cortisol, your body can adequately produce melatonin—the chemical that makes you feel tired and ready for sleep—and help you sleep more easily.

Epilepsy
As CBD became more widely available, you may have heard people suffering from epilepsy report that CBD has decreased the number of seizures they experience. Research has supported these claims, and the FDA recently approved a cannabis-derived medication to treat childhood seizure disorders.
However, it should be noted that conditions such as Dravet syndrome often do not respond well to anti-seizure medications, including CBD. CBD is safe to experiment with if you’re interested in trying it, but speaking to your doctor if you intend to use CBD to treat your epilepsy is always a good idea.
