7 Keys to Having a Successful Career After College
  • Opening Intro -

Most people go to college in hopes of snagging a great job in the future.

However, graduating from school does not automatically lead to future prosperity.

-------------------------------------

Here are seven keys to having a successful career after college.

Summer Internship

Participating in a summer internship is a great way to gain some extra experience. If you show potential, your supervisor may be willing to give you a permanent position in the future. However, sometimes doing a summer internship will show you that this isn’t the job for you or what you thought it would be. Sometimes people find that they like a different aspect of the industry they are interning for and decide to change course in their career path. With that said, some people actually decide to change career paths after completing their internship.

Balance Your Life

Most people understand the importance of working hard. On the other hand, over-stressing your mind and body can lead to burnout. Instead of saving up all of your vacation time, feel free to take a few days off when possible. Spend some quality time with your family and friends.

Network

Networking helps to build solid business and personal relationships. Most jobs are actually found by networking and it could definitely help you to land your dream job. Anyone you know can be used as a networking resource. Although most people choose to network with their professors and classmates, you should expand your horizons by networking with people from all walks of life. Consider networking with co-workers and previous employers as well.

Eliminate Fear of Rejection

The fear of rejection can cause a person to miss out on a lot of career opportunities. If you feel that you deserve a promotion, do not be afraid to discuss the topic with your boss. Failing to take chances can bring your progression to a standstill. Use rejection as a source of motivation. You will often surprise yourself with how far you can get by taking chances every now and again.

Vocational College

Enrolling in a vocational college will help to expand your skill set. Some vocational programs can actually be completed in only one year. Some of the available subjects include healthcare, cosmetology, graphic design, fashion, business, and informational technology. In the event that you grow tired of your current career, the vocational degree will definitely come in handy.

Find a Mentor

A mentor may prove to be very valuable. Contrary to popular belief, a mentor does not have to be an employee at your workplace. There are plenty of retirees who would love to share their years of experience and knowledge with you. Take your mentor to a restaurant so that you can chat while eating a delicious meal.

Be Careful When Social Networking

It seems that everyone has gotten aboard the social networking bandwagon. This means that you must be very careful when commenting on certain subjects. If your co-workers find your statements to be offensive, it can jeopardize your job.

These tips should help you to achieve success in your chosen career. Remember, hard work and dedication will take you to the top of the mountain.
