6 Practical Tips To Lower Your Electricity Bills Significantly and Save Money
  • Opening Intro -

With electricity prices always on the rise, knowing how to save energy at home can significantly reduce your energy bills.

Lower energy bills mean more money in your bank account, and less harmful emissions being released into the environment.

The best past is that no experience or expensive investment is required to save electricity; just simple changes that every homeowner can do on their own. Here are some practical tips to get you started:

1. Switch to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs)

The easiest and quickest ways to reduce your energy bills is by replacing your current incandescent bulbs with CFLs. CFLs last 10 times longer, and spend about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. To help you get maximum savings, choose CFLs that have the Energy Star label. They may cost more upfront to purchase than the standard bulbs, but you’ll be able to recover the money within a few months of use.

2. Purchase Energy Star Appliances

The Energy Star label indicates that a product meets the energy-efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency. According to Energy Star, appliances bearing the label, use between 10% and 50% less energy than those without the label, which can translate into a significant amount of energy savings per year. So, the next time you go shopping for a new appliance, ensure you choose one with the Energy Star label.

3. Install Smart Switches

Another way to avoid wasting electricity is through investing in smart switches. These are switches that have built-in motion sensors that automatically turn the lights on and off so that you pay for only what you need. They are perfect for people who usually forget to turn the lights off at night, especially in the bedroom.

4. Use Electronics Responsibly

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 75% of electricity consumption by electronic products is used when the products are turned off. That means that your television, computer and home theater system, continue to suck lots of electricity all day long from the power strip even when they’re turned off. To stop electricity wastage, ensure you unplug all electric appliances that you’re not using, or better yet, plug all of them into a power strip, and then switch off the strip.

In addition, don’t expose fridges and freezers to direct sunlight, or place them near the dishwasher, stove or heat vents. Why? Because exposure to warm or hot temperature forces them to use extra energy to stay cool.

5. Service the Air Conditioner Yearly

One of the best ways to keep an air conditioner running at maximum efficiency is to spend a few hours a year doing basic maintenance services such as cleaning the fins, lubricating the motor and changing the filter. If you’re not a DIY kind of person, you can call in a professional to do the job for you. Also, place your air con away from direct sunlight to avoid additional electricity consumption.

6. Reduce Your Electric Water Heating

If you’re the type of person who only uses an electric water heater once or twice a day, then you’re wasting a lot of electricity leaving the water hot 24 hours a day. To stop the wastage, consider installing an electronic timer switch. There are timers available for different heaters that you can buy and program to heat your water only when you need it.

Make sure you drain your tank and flush out all the sediments at the bottom to avoid wasting energy on heating sediments before reaching the water. This way, your heater will only use the energy it needs.

Implement the above simple energy saving tips to help reduce your electricity bills significantly.
