For employees who are ready to finally earn a steady income, here are some tips that can be used to put yourself in the best possible position for a raise.
Know Your Value
Before you even consider speaking with your boss about a raise, you should first take a look at how much others are getting paid for doing similar work. There are a number of great online resources that allow workers to check the average salary for their position throughout the country.
Don’t Wait for Your Annual Review
You don’t want to wait until a week before your annual review to begin collecting information. Every employee should keep a folder of their accomplishments, awards, and major projects they have completed over the last few years.
Ease Into the Conversation
Instead of immediately coming out and asking for a raise, you might want to ask your boss about your overall performance. When they complement your work or talk about any of your accomplishments, then you can use that as a starting point to talk about the raise.
Don’t Make It Personal
Those who are asking for a raise should treat the meeting just as if it was any other business meeting. This means keeping emotions out of the conversation as much as possible and only sticking to the facts. Complaining about the extra work you have had to put in will most likely discourage your boss from giving you the raise.
Set Yourself Apart With Additional Schooling
You should be able to give your employer concrete examples of how you are continuing to improve yourself. In addition to industry-specific certifications, you should also consider heading back to school to acquire a degree related to your field. For example, getting a Master of Public Administration online can show that you are ready to be a more influential leader and take on more responsibility.
Don’t Get Discouraged
Just because the conversation didn’t go as well as you would have liked does not mean you are at a dead-end job. If your boss refuses to give you a raise or promotion, then ask them what they would like to see from you in the future.
Earning a bigger paycheck requires much more than diligence and company loyalty. Employees need to take some time to learn about their own position, the state of their company, and the industry as a whole before asking their boss for a much-needed raise.
