How to Find a Way to Afford the Surgery You Need
  • Opening Intro -

Have you recently been told by your doctor that you need to have surgery?

If so, you might be worried about how you will pay for it.

-------------------------------------

The good news is that you can find a way to afford the surgery you need.

Shop Around

Many people falsely assume that it will cost the same amount to have surgery no matter where they have it. The truth is that it can be more expensive to have surgery in a surgical center than it is to have surgery in a hospital. Also, it is usually less expensive to have a surgical procedure performed in the doctor’s office than it is in a hospital. Shop around to find out all of your options. If your current doctor only performs surgery at the expensive surgical center in your area, ask him to refer you to another doctor who could perform the same procedure in his office.  You can always compare your options by contacting your insurance company with several scenarios to get them to estimate the costs for you.

Ask about Discounts

Never be afraid to ask for discounts even on your medical bills. Some for profit hospitals offer patients a discount if they will pay for their surgery in advance. You could save as much as 40% off of your total hospital bill by calling ahead and paying with your credit card over the phone. Instead of worrying over the cost of the surgery, call to find out if you qualify for a discount. The surgery might not cost as much as you think it does. Some medical facilities even offer you a discount for paying in cash.

Look for Charitable Options

If you are in a tough place financially, look for charities in your area that may be able to help you with the cost of the surgery. For example, if you are the wife of a veteran, contact the American Legion Auxiliary in your area for assistance. Some charities will pay for a portion of or all of a medical procedure if you can provide proof of financial need.

Work It Off

Some hospitals will actually allow patients to work off the money they own on their hospital bills. If you get to a point after you have the surgery that you cannot pay your bill, you may be able to work at the hospital in various capacities to work off the amount you owe. While it may take time to pay off the balance, this option works well if you don’t mind the physical labor.

You should never have to put off surgery because of the cost. Try these tips to find the money you need to have surgery as soon as possible.
