Healthcare or Not? Five Factors to Consider in Choosing a Health Career
  • Opening Intro -

Are you looking for a future career field? If so, you might be thinking about a career in the healthcare field.

It can be quite difficult to know what direction your career path can take, but there are certainly many reasons that people pick the healthcare route.

-------------------------------------

It can be a good option for many people because there are so many job opportunities in a variety of disciplines within the healthcare field. Not only are there an array of opportunities, but there are also many other benefits that often come with working in this industry.

Many positions are rewarded handsomely financially, many come with good benefits, and many provide quite a lot of scheduling flexibility.  However, there are cons to consider, too. If you are seriously considering a career in the health field, consider the following five factors.

Educational Components

Your first consideration must be give to the type of commitment you are willing to make to get into the health care field. You will need to enter an educational program that will train you for the specific position you want. Most medical programs have two components. You will need to complete coursework either in person or online and complete practice hours in the field.

Shift Work

You should also consider the work schedule of many employees in a health career. You may not be able to find a job in the health care field that is from 8-5 like other traditional careers. You may have to work an afternoon, evening, or night shift, especially when you first get your certification. If evening and night shifts don’t work for your schedule, this may not be the career field for you.

Working in the Field

Think about the type of work you will actually perform in the field to see if it is right for you. Most healthcare professionals work as a part of a healthcare team, so you must be able to get along with others well. You must be able to manage your time well since the healthcare field is very fast paced. You may deal with life and death issues on a daily basis, so you must be able to deal with stress.

Working with Patients

If you choose a healthcare career, you will have to work with patients. This means you must be good at talking to people and enjoy meeting new people. You must be empathetic and considerate. Also, you will need patience. Many go into medicine for the love of the science and abstract not realizing just how much there is a customer service element to this line of work. While not all medical field pursuits require working with patients, most require some degree of skill in personal interaction with others, even if it’s just coworkers.  In general, you should make sure you don’t mind working with others.

Attention to Details

Finally, you must be attentive to details. Since you are dealing with life or death situations, serious diseases and illnesses, and bad injuries, you must make sure your paperwork is always correct, or the patient could suffer or even die.

Take these actors into consideration to see if a healthcare career is right for you. You have to be a good fit for this field, or you won’t last long.
