This course can expose you to many opportunities if giving care to animals has always been your passion, maybe because you had pets that you loved so much in your childhood, or maybe you were raised in a family that had a lot of domestic animals and you created a bond with them. You should not be discouraged if you are the only person you know who wants to take this career path.

There are many other vets and students of veterinary medicine. For example, in the United States alone, there are more that eighty six thousand veterinarians who are registered under the American Veterinary Medical Association. This number shows that there could be even hundreds of thousands of students studying this course in universities.

One misconception that usually discourages most people is that veterinarians don’t seem to get paid as much as other medical professions. This is however not true because the annual salary of a veterinarian is very close to what graduates of human medicine earn, although it takes a shorter time to study veterinary medicine.

For veterinary medicine, you are a potential candidate for many careers or you can as well go into business, like manufacturing different animal feeds, for example Persian cat food. Here are some career paths to choose from within this course:

Going into private practice.

After you have gained some experience in the work field and been fortunate enough to work with different global organizations, you can decide to go into your own private practice. This implies that you will have your own veterinary office where clients will come to see you exclusively.

To be well prepared to take this action, you should specialize in one area of veterinary medicine, like orthopedics or aquatic animal medicine. This will make clients know the area of your specialty and therefore the clients will come to you knowing that you will offer very professional services. They will be assured that their pet will receive the best care possible while in the hands of a professional.

Public Practice.

Even though working for the government is not a popular career path, different government institutions still do need someone of your expertise. An association dealing with agriculture will greatly demand several veterinarians. In the process of food inspection, the skills of a veterinarian will help in a big way in ensuring that only safe food is supplied.

You will also be needed by your country to inspect every animal that comes into the nation to prevent any situation where an animal that is carrying a deadly virus is exposed to the public. You will also be working with veterinary officers and farmers of other states in fighting certain animal diseases that can threaten the animal as well as human population.
