Busy Dads: How to Stay Connected While Traveling

Busy Dads: How to Stay Connected While Traveling
  • Opening Intro -

Fathers that take to the road on business will soon discover that they miss out on important life events especially as their children grow.

-------------------------------------

Road warrior dads must rely on their wives to provide the bulk of the parenting, but thanks to modern technologies, fathers can remain engaged with their children even when they are thousands of miles away from home. Remind your family that you care about them by employing one or more of the following strategies the next time you take to the road.

1. Connect by video. You can see your children daily while you are away from home. Video chat can be accomplished via Skype, Android, Gmail and Apple, enabling families to stay connected. The length of your calls are not important, but the scope of your conversation is. Make a point to prioritize your calls to connect with your sons and daughters at an arranged hour every day.

2. Send out a text message. Teens with phones are savvy at getting and receiving text messages. Make a note in your daily planner for those days that your son or daughter has an important assignment due or a test to take. Offer a few words of encouragement and invite your children to send notes to you as well.

3. Follow that star. If your trip has you hopscotching the country on business, have your children follow you on a map. With your spouse’s help, your children can place stars at various stopping points along your journey. This can help your children stay connected and learn valuable geography lessons too.

4. Pick up a gift. You are gone, but you are certainly not forgotten. Your children, however, miss you and are looking forward to your return. Make a point to pick up a gift for your spouse and small gifts for your children. A gift that is tied in with a place that you visit can be interesting and well received. Bring the gift with you or have it delivered by mail or by package delivery. Your children will love to open a personally addressed package and will know that Daddy is always thinking about them.

Travel Considerations

When traveling, keep in mind the time zone differences as you connect with your family. If a video chat cannot be arranged, pick up the phone and speak with your family members individually. For overseas travel, you may need to contact your cell phone provider before you leave to arrange for coverage. Expect to pay roaming charges as part of the cost of staying connected with your loved ones.
