A Graduate’s Guide to Adulting

A Graduate’s Guide to Adulting
  • Opening Intro -

As you go finish your final semester of college, you can see one thing looming on the edge of the horizon, urging you on through exams, papers, and sleepless nights of studying.

-------------------------------------

The rest of your adult life spreads out before you, stretching from graduation day and into the unknown. Making the jump from a college student to a “real adult” can be daunting—in fact, adulting in general is scary. Fortunately, you’re not the only one who feels like this.

No matter where you are in adulthood, you’re not alone. To help you out, here’s our graduate’s guide to adulting: all the top tips you need to start a successful career as a real adult.

Get a Job (That You Actually Want)

By the time you’re ready to graduate college, you probably know all the important parts of job searching. You need a solid résumé and well-written cover letter. Networking is a must—both in person and on online platforms such as LinkedIn.

You should be well-dressed, punctual, and prepared for every interview you walk into. However, pursuing a career takes a lot more than the best professional tips.

Whether or not you have a job lined up, now is the time to think about what you truly want to do with your life. Pay attention to the things you’re good at, even beyond your studies or career field.

What do you enjoy? What are your values? Are you a team player? A creative problem-solver?

These answers can help you find not only your dream career field, but also the kind of role you want to play within it.

Make Your House a Home

A person’s home is their castle—even if that home is actually a tiny apartment. When life gets stressful, it’s important to have a safe, comfortable space to come back to.

Wherever you live—whether it’s a cheap apartment or a glorious castle—take good care of it and make it your own. Arrange your bedroom and living room to fit your needs.

Decorate as much as you can and want. Make sure you keep it clean. Don’t let dishes pile up or laundry sit on the floor for too long.

Your place will look nicer when people come over, and you’ll feel better coming home to a clean apartment after a long day of adulting.

Figure Out Finances

It wouldn’t be a graduate’s guide to adulting without some financial advice. Between loans, insurance, budgets, and more, finances are a key part of adulthood. The most important thing you can do for yourself is to learn more about how your finances work.

other valuable tips:

Make sure you understand all the details about your student loans: how much you owe, your interest rate, how and when you’re going to pay them back, et cetera. Along with loans comes insurance.

There are a lot of details, regulations, and terms that vary from state to state, so make sure you read up on how it all works in your state. You can find plenty of first-time car insurance tips, information on different types of health insurance, and more online.

Your parents, professors, and other trusted adults are also invaluable sources of information. Adulthood can be confusing, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.
