All About Eating Healthy While Saving Money

All About Eating Healthy While Saving Money
  • Opening Intro -

While you might look at these tips and say to yourself that the savings are negligible, and that you're not going sacrifice your delicious double cheeseburger from the burger joint down the street just to save a dollar here or there.

That's definitely your choice, but the biggest way eating healthy can save you money, is that it can make you healthier.

-------------------------------------

We all have to eat, right? The amount of money we spend on food on will vary depending on the size of our families and the size of their appetites. One thing is for sure; outside of having our own garden, we will have to spend money on everything we eat. So, how do we save money? Get fast food and ramen noodles every night? No. In fact, the answer to saving money is simple. Eat healthy.

1. Tof Luck

A simple substitution of tofu for meat, say twice a week, can really cook up some savings. Tofu is similar nutritionally to most meats and can be turned into almost any flavor you’re looking for. Just swapping tofu for meat twice a week can save up to $15!

2. Be smart when buying fruit in the winter time.

Strawberries are so good and so healthy and so expensive come wintertime. Instead of giving your family strawberries in the winter, feed them oranges instead. Oranges stay more inexpensive than strawberries and are extremely comparable in nutritional value. You can save $2-$3 per packet of strawberries if you use oranges instead. Then, once summer returns and the price drops, enjoy your strawberries!

3. Buy in bulk and jar!

This is probably the simplest and maybe most enjoyable way to save money on food. Replace your “out to eat” night with “cook in” night. Either alone, or as a family bonding experience, one night a week, get in the kitchen and get peeling, chopping, mixing, and flipping your way to savings. Buying in bulk will always save you money and if you’re able to jar the bulk meals you’ve prepared, you’ll make sure you’re not wasting food and getting the most out of your money.

4. Enjoy your local farmer’s market.

A lot of people see stands of fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, cheeses and meats at their local farmer’s market and assume it’s going to be more expensive. It isn’t. Most of the time it’s either the same price as the supermarket down the street or even cheaper. Plus, once you’ve attended the farmer’s market a few times you’ll start to get to know the vendors and find which vendor has the best products at the best price.

To save even more money, go as the farmer’s market is getting ready to close. A lot of vendors will try to unload their unsold products at an even more reduced price. Another bonus is that farmer’s markets are usually held on the weekend which ensures you’ll have fresh food and won’t have to use lack of food as an excuse to go out to eat.

While you might look at these tips and say to yourself that the savings are negligible, and that you’re not going sacrifice your delicious double cheeseburger from the burger joint down the street just to save a dollar here or there. That’s definitely your choice, but the biggest way eating healthy can save you money, is that it can make you healthier. A healthier you is more likely to be more productive and not have to spend so much on health care, which as we know is a huge expense. Enjoy these tips, and search for more so you can fill your families bellies without draining your pocketbook.
