The Easiest Path to Becoming a Medical Health Coding and Billing Professional Through eLearning
  • Opening Intro -

    The Electronic Health Records, HER, Act that was recently passed by the United States made it mandatory for healthcare providers --

    -- to not only digitize all the patient information

    -- but to also make it easily shareable amongst all interested and permitted healthcare service providers and other service providers such as insurance companies.

This means that the upshot of this is that the patient data must first be collected and as such in a proper universal manner, enter the medical coder.

Medical coding is the transformation of healthcare diagnosis, procedures, medical services and equipment into universal alphanumeric codes, where alphanumeric simply means to letters of the alphabet and number form.  The diagnosis and procedure codes are derived from the patients’ medical records e.g. physicians notes, lab and radiology results. The medical coder is a healthcare IT professional who is in charge of processing patient data.

Medical Coders Brief

The patient data that they deal with include treatment records, which contain demographic data, and medical records and the accompanying insurance information. Therefore in a nutshell they are responsible for coding all the patients’ data in a universal digital format which can be shared and be easily understood by any authorized person be they hospitals or insurance services providers.

ELearning has transformed the education sector and this is due to the fact that one can learn practically anything that they want to learn without having to attend classes in residence in a brick and mortar school. This is the wave of the future and training to be a medical coder falls well within this realm. Online learning is preferred due to its unmatched convenience as it is often self-paced and due to the cheaper costs for these programs.

To be sure, you must watch out for a couple of things before you jump headlong and enroll for a medical coding course in order to get a world class certification( diploma or degree) that give you full value for money, as this is the first step to working for a medical billing company.

Do check for the following;

  • Cost –
    Do extensive research to find out which course suits your budget as this will go a long way in determining how you go about funding your education. The simple rule of thumb is that it should be significantly lower than enrolling for a full time degree.
  • Accreditation and Certification –
    You would not want to invest significant resources of time and money only to discover that the qualification you received is only as good as the paper that it was printed on. Therefore do the necessary due diligence to find out if the school is qualified to offer the training that you require. The accreditation bodies are AHIMA, AAPC and CAHIM.
  • Duration –
    This is a no  brainer since most of these courses are tailored around the lifestyles of busy professionals, you need to be clear from the outset how much time that you will need to commit to the studies and if you will be able to avail that required time.
