Airline Miles? Get ‘Em Or Get Rid Of ‘Em!

For many years now, airlines have used frequent flyer miles as a way to gain your patronage. Business travelers love these types of rewards programs as they can take those miles and turn them into a nice family vacation with most or all airfare costs covered.

Those Fast Expiring Airline Miles

airlinerBut, as well all know, airline miles expire before you can use them while restrictions can keep you from getting full use of free miles when you want them. Worse, are those times you really want to take a trip and you fall short by several thousand miles. What looked like a low cost vacation has suddenly become a big expense, something you weren’t banking on in the midst of a recession.

Two enterprising individuals have seen what amounts to be hundreds of billions of dollars in airline miles potentially going to waste and have come up with a creative idea to help people get miles or get rid of them.

On, consumers (not retailers) can post items or services that they would be willing to swap for miles or straight-up tickets, free of charge. They can also post miles that they need for miles on virtually ANY other airline, a solution to topping off that frequent flier account that is close to having enough miles for that next trip.

According to the founders: “It’s a game changer for sure. The poor economic climate has been a blessing as we provide a service that costs nothing and creates value. We’re sort of like an eBay or Amazon where the currency is frequent flyer miles instead of cash. Everyone asks why no one thought of this before!” One recent user summed it up best when she said, “It’s like shopping with play money.”

Launched In December 2008

BETA launched last month, Mile High Swap allows everyone to sign up for free, passing along a small service fee when members choose to negotiate a deal with each other.  Most recently a member was pitching her 32 piece of never used Provence Rouge Royal Doulton fine china worth $900 in exchange for airline miles. Others are offering services such as house painting or desiring to exchange airline miles from various plans for others.

Though new, Mile High Swap and sites like it could give consumers a chance to keep their expenses down which is no small feat in these challenging economic times.
