Well, I am speaking about a business of a child care center popularly known as a day care center. Most of the parents are working today and have nobody at their homes to take care of their kids. Starting with a day care business is an excellent way to kick start with a fair business that has a good cause associated with it. This way, you get an opportunity to earn money as well as serve the society.
If you think you can make a go, keep these things in mind:
Be well prepared before taking the plunge. Ask yourself a few questions to know if you can handle childcare competently, successfully and make money with it. Of course, you may not place much emphasis on money, but still, you need to make money to pay for costs and salaries. These questions should pop in your mind:
- Do you have the patience and can you handle yourself with equanimity when faced with a dozen or so squalling kids?
- Do you have the budget and space at home?
- Can you meet licensing regulations for your area and if not, what additional resources and processes would you have to factor in?
- Will you offer teaching facility and if so which program to use and are you a competent teacher? If not, how much does it cost to employ qualified people?
- The going rate for day care in your region?
- The competition? If there are a dozen or so centers offering day care or childcare services you may be hard put to find a single client.
The answers should give you a better idea of whether you should proceed with starting a childcare center of your own. If you are positive, go ahead.
You may have some funds, but it is better to look for other options too. You can obtain government funding from Child and Adult Food Care Program if you aim to make it a business. If you wish to launch childcare services on a non-profit basis, the scope of obtaining grants is wider.
Different States in the US have different laws for licensing child care services. Understand them, get a copy of the regulations and make sure you comply with them. Some states may have exemptions if the number of children below the age of 12 is less than 3. Your home should have a separate area for daycare facilities, and it should meet hygiene standards, be well-ventilated, lighted and heated. The area should have a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher. There are lots of other requirements you will have to comply with.
Franchise or Your Own?
It is easy to take up a franchise. This way, you just take care of providing the premises and make it ready. You get customers walking in through the door because you become part of an established chain. This may involve payment of high franchise fees for childcare. If you become an independent childcare services provider, you have to advertise and promote.
Advertising and Promotion
You cannot just prepare your premises and sit back for people to walk through the door. Advertising and promotions involve expenses, so provision for these in your financial plans are a must. Handbills, flyers, spots on local radio and TV, newspaper ads social media and other avenues will need to be pursued vigorously in the initial stages of promoting child care services.
Simple or Specialist
An ordinary day care center for kids takes care of normal children. You could also focus on children with special needs. Consider the implications before going in that direction.
A careful review will help you make a decision and succeed in your venture.
