Simple and Effective Ways to Keep Your Car’s Value High

Simple and Effective Ways to Keep Your Car’s Value High
  • Opening Intro -

Your car is much more than just a way to get from point A to point B.

It’s an investment, and you need to maximize its value over time.

-------------------------------------

Why should you worry about keeping your car’s value high? Well, one obvious reason would be if you plan to sell it. However, even if you plan to use it as a trade-in down the road, ensuring it retains the highest possible value is important. Of course, that means you need to know how to go about keeping your ride’s value up. Here are some simple, effective tips to ensure you can do just that.

Regular Maintenance Is Essential

Perhaps the first (and most important) tip to ensuring your vehicle’s value stays high is to make sure you stick to a regular maintenance program. Oil changes, tire rotations, air filter changes and other fluid changes at regular intervals (transmission, differential, etc.) will help ensure that your car stays in good mechanical shape, which is one of the most important factors in determining a vehicle’s value.

Cut Back on Driving

One huge detractor from a car’s value is high mileage. For instance, consider two identical models. They’re the same year, they have both had their regular maintenance, and they’re both in great physical condition. However, one car has 50,000 miles on the odometer, but the other is up to 120,000. The one with 50,000 miles on it will have a much higher value than the one that’s been driven hard. Fewer miles on the odometer usually equates to more remaining life in the vehicle’s mechanical systems, which is what buyers want.

Maintain the Exterior

Other than the engine and transmission, the exterior of your car is the area that takes the most abuse. Think about it – the outside of your car has to deal with sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, road salt, rocks, dirt, dust and debris on a regular basis. It’s also the first thing that a prospective buyer will see, and will be responsible for making a good or bad first impression. Take care of the outside of your car. Washing and waxing your vehicle regularly will help keep dirt and dust from building up, help hide minor scratches and will even help prevent paint oxidation from sun exposure.

Watch Where You Park

Storing your car properly is an important part of keeping its value as high as possible. For instance, if you park outdoors, you’ll find that nature really takes a toll. Parking under trees might shade the interior, but it can lead to problems like sap buildup and even mold and mildew in some instances. If you have a garage available, park your car inside. You’ll find that proper storage can lengthen the life of your vehicle and help avoid costly repairs down the road.

Don’t Stuff Your Face

We live in a fast-paced world, and eating on the go has become the norm for many of us. However, it’s a wise decision to avoid shoveling that 1/2 pound burger into your mouth while you’re in the car. Stains and spills can do a real number on your interior, and you’ll find that food odors from wrappers and containers can embed themselves in your interior and car mats.  They can be next to impossible to remove. No buyer is going to want to pay you for a vehicle that smells like it’s a fast food restaurant.

With these simple tips, you should be able to keep your car’s value as high as possible and maximize that investment.
