This can mean that young people who want to get involved with environmental issues might be deterred through fear of being ridiculed, or they might not want to be part of such extreme demonstrations.
However, the main drive for many activists is to protect the environment and not all activists are on the front line marching for global change. There are a vast number of people behind the scenes who are addressing major global challenges through their day to day work, whether that is through forestry or science engineering.
Here are four degree programs that are directed towards maintaining the environment and tackling important global problems.
1. Environmental Science
An environmental science program is centered on using traditional scientific studies to develop solutions for environmental problems around the globe. The program’s aim is to help students gain a greater understanding of the scientific processes behind environmental systems by educating them in most of the physical sciences – biology, geology, chemistry, physics and earth science. The focus of each environmental science program will differ, but they often cover topics such as global climate change, biodiversity, sustainability and economic development.
2. Forestry
The main objective behind a forestry program is to educate students about the various complexities that form the relationship between forests and human society. The curriculum is centered on the integration of communication skills, ecosystem sciences (such as chemistry and physics), and management techniques, with the core focus continually set on forestry classes.
3. Bioengineering
Bioengineering fuses biological science with engineering and seeks to educate students in the design and development of new technological systems, which can be used to improve the environment by manufacturing food, chemical and pharmaceutical products using renewable biological materials. A typical bioengineering program will integrate physical, biological and environmental sciences with engineering skills to teach students about economical methods for improving air and water quality, water management and soil remediation.
4. Geographic Information Science and Technology
A geographic information science and technology degree program allows students who are motivated in addressing major global problems to learn about the importance of future technological breakthroughs via geospatial technologies. Various online GIST programs are available at a number of universities, including the University of Southern California, and are all focused on ways in which location or geography can be used to acquire, analyze and visualize information. Students are required to explore the relationship between geographic information science, new scientific discoveries and GIS technology. Graduates of an online GIST program will be well equipped to tackle global challenges such as climate change, human health and urbanization.
These environmental subjects, along with others such as ecology and ocean engineering, are all focused on developing ways of natural resource conservation, preparation and prevention of future global problems, and the restoration of areas that have been affected by climate change.
