The interior design field is a great place for creative minds to thrive.

To maximize their chances of success, hopeful designers should learn the proper steps for pursuing a job in this industry.

Read this guide to learn the basics of how to become an interior designer.

Truly Want It

Working in interior design isn’t really a role people take as a side job; it should be something you’re truly passionate about. Passion doesn’t pay the bills, but it can provide you with the motivation you need to get out there and make that career happen.

As you’ll learn below, becoming an interior designer isn’t like sending an application to a local fast-food joint to become a cashier. To begin your career, you have to find a college with the ability to provide you with the proper education.

Earn Your Degree

To become an interior designer, you don’t have to complete an eight-year college education. You can go for a master’s degree, but it’s not a must. That said, anyone in the industry should earn at least a bachelor’s degree.

Going through interior design courses will help you learn the essentials before going out and networking.

For example, knowing how to tackle issues such as carrying color schemes throughout homes is a skill interior designers should have early on in their careers.

If you have a bachelor’s degree, you can earn two years of training in the field and then take a crack at the NCIDQ Exam to become qualified.

Complete the NCIDQ Exam

NCIDQ stands for National Council for Interior Design Qualification. Completing the NCIDQ exam grants designers-in-training with their interior designer license. That said, the requirements of this license vary between states.

Look through your state’s guidelines on the subject to determine where they stand.  Some states won’t allow unlicensed individuals to become interior designers. On the other hand, some states will allow unlicensed individuals to work in the field, but not under the official “interior designer” job title.

Build Your Work Portfolio

Finally, you can begin building your interior design portfolio. Building your portfolio might sound daunting, but it requires the same passion and effort that got you here in the first place.

Start building your portfolio by offering free work to friends and family. Working for free is rarely fun, but it’s a necessary early step for many professions, including interior design.

Besides honing your skills, free work gives you the chance to build up your portfolio by taking pictures of any projects you complete. Make sure you’re taking high-quality photos; the image’s quality should reflect the quality of the craftsmanship in the image. A solid portfolio is the key to winning over clients and finally getting paid as an interior designer.
