Luckily, there are many ways to do this so that each school can choose the route that best fits their culture and mission. Learn some of the essential ways universities can better support students below!
Offer a Variety of Student Services
You have to support students in more than their education, especially if it’s their first year. While educating is the primary goal, your institution can do more than provide academic support. Therefore, there are a few different services the school can provide to help those on campus:
- Counseling services
- Career centers
- Network training and events
- Student gym and activity centers
These are just a few options, but get creative! There’s more than one way to give the students what they need and what they want.
Provide Volunteer Opportunities
Another method of supporting students and helping them grow and develop is by providing consistent volunteer opportunities.
Volunteering not only boosts their resumes, but it also helps them learn important traits and skills to become more empathetic, well-rounded individuals in the future.
Now, that said, even if you have the volunteer opportunities, you’ll need to motivate them to follow through with them. There are a few different ways universities can encourage giving back, whether it’s through incentives or required volunteer hours.
Either way, it’s imperative that students participate in charitable acts consistently throughout college. In doing so, your school will produce students who want to create a better world and care for their communities.
Create Opportunities to Engage With Alumni
Alumni engagement is an important service to offer in order to support your students. They always say that the way you succeed, get a job after college, and move up in the world has to do with who you know.
The university can support students in reaching their potential by creating different opportunities to engage with alumni. Things like mentor programs, classes with alumni guest speakers, and alumni networking brunches are all opportunities to create relationships.
If you don’t have any alumni engagement opportunities, really hone in on that in the coming year. Especially while students are mostly remote, virtual networking events end up being quite beneficial.
Seek Out Feedback
Another way universities can better support students is by seeking out feedback. When it comes to activities on campus, food served at the cafeteria, dorm rooms, or anything else, students are the ones who know it best. Nobody knows the pros and cons better, and nobody will answer as honestly as students do.
other valuable tips:
When the university gives students a space to air their grievances and then actually does something with that feedback, that ensures happier, more supported students.
Whether this is a tactic used by professors, clubs, RAs, or any other area of administration, this feedback gives institutions insight on what is working and what needs to change. In the end, that will lead to a better student experience and a better-supported student body.
