A lot of articles will tell you to buy all-new energy-efficient products—this is a good idea if you can afford it, but spending that amount of money isn’t possible for a lot of people. Luckily, there are tons of ways to reduce your carbon footprint and save money in the long run.

Use Smart Clothing Practices
Fast fashion is one major way a lot of people elevate their carbon footprints. A simple way to negate this effect is to use smart clothing practices.
This means a few different things: donate your old clothes instead of tossing them out; avoid fast fashion spots; and shop at thrift stores as much as possible.
Throwing clothes in the garbage means they go to landfills, which take up a lot of space on our planet and create a lot of methane.
If you don’t have time to drop off your clothes at a charity organization, schedule a donation pickup with a charity such as Purple Heart. Tons of organizations will pick up your clothing donations, saving you time and gas.
Bike or Walk More to Save Gas
It’s important to think about when you can bike or walk instead of drive, especially as spring gets closer. This not only cuts back on fossil fuels, but also saves you from constantly spending money on gas.
You may not be able to bike your hour-long commute to work, but biking to the store for a few groceries or to a meetup with a friend can make a huge difference.
Start Recycling and Composting
If you’re not following through 100% on your recycling practices, it’s really time to start. Stop using single-use plastic items, and if you do, make sure to recycle them. Once you’ve truly gotten the recycling thing down, start composting. Food waste is a major problem, and the sooner you start doing something with the food you were going to toss out, the better off your gardens and the environment will be.

You don’t need to cut meat out of your diet entirely, but eliminating meat a few days out of the week is much better for your wallet and for the environment. Meat is expensive, and meat and dairy production is a major factor in fossil fuel production. When you eat less meat, you’re taking a stand against that harmful gas production.
Do an Energy Audit of Your Home
As we mentioned previously, a wonderful way to reduce your carbon footprint is to invest in energy-efficient appliances. However, we know this isn’t possible for everyone. That said, something anyone can afford to do is perform an energy audit of their home.
This will tell you all the areas in your home that are wasting or using too much energy. From there, you can make small changes to reduce your home’s energy output.
