Career changes are becoming more common, and people make career changes for a variety of reason. Some transition out of a field that is no longer a good fit for their lives, some desire a career that will offer more money, while other simply need a change of pace. Before you get started on your journey to a new career path, here are a few pointers to keep in mind.
Plot Your Path
If you are transitioning from one career path to something completely different, it’s important to plot your path. For example, an administrative assistant who wants to become a teacher should explore schools in their area, and do research to get a rough idea of how the hiring process works.
When changing careers to something totally different, be aware that there might be pay cuts and other issues to think about. Consider how these will impact you, and if you will need to work more than one job. Be sure to think through how this will change your lifestyle, and what you need to make a smooth transition.
Consider Going Back to School
In some cases, going back to school will be mandatory to get into the new career of your choice. This is true for careers like nursing and teaching, both of which demand higher education. Other professions might require special certification, or licensing. Whatever your career calls for, educate yourself on the different options for getting the credentials you need, such as evening classes or online learning.
Even if going back to school sounds next to impossible, these alternatives can make it possible for your to acquire the education you need to get hired in your new field. With a bit of research, you can almost certainly find a solution that will work for you.
Create A Resume That Highlights Your Experience
When launching a new career, it’s important to create a resume that helps you put your best foot forward. This means showing employers all of the transferable skills, education, and experience you’ll bring to the table, and how you could be a benefit to their company. Examine the skills and experience you’ve gained from previous jobs, and how that experience will translate to the position to which you are applying.
For example, if you have worked retail but want to make a move into the fitness industry, emphasizing your years of customer service and your ability to listen to and empathize with others would be relevant skills to highlight. This could be a great way of showing that you are a perfect fit, despite not having direct experience in the fitness field.
Remember that some resume formats work better than others for those looking to make a major career change. Studying resume writing best practices can help you understand the best way to present your experience.
Remember That All Good Things Take Time
Rome was not built in a day, and neither will your new career materialize overnight. This may be frustrating to hear, but keep this in mind as you apply for new jobs. Even if you are applying for entry-level positions, you could be competing with others who come with more direct experience. Keep trying and focus on building skills and experiences that help to build up your resume.
Study the resumes and cover letters of others in the field you hope to break into to see how they are formatted. Network with other professionals in the field and ask for their advice on how to propel your job search forward. Think outside the box to find way to gather experience and knowledge in your new field. This might include doing volunteer work related to your industry, blogging on a topic of interest, or taking classes to learn new skills.
All good things take time so during times of frustration try to remember that if you focus on what your end goal is and keep working toward the career you want, you will eventually land the job you want.
