As a business manager you are tasked with advancing changes that can benefit your company. Full cooperation from your employees is required; here is how you can get it.
Present Your Case
Change for the sake of change does not make sense to most people. We are creatures of habit and like the way we live our lives, including the way that we work — thank you very much.
As a business manager, you can effect change by demonstrating the reason behind it. For instance, if your company plans to sell a new product or offer a different service, you can explain how that change will keep your business competitive as it responds to changing customer demand. Help your team see beyond the present to what their future holds.
Show Your Enthusiasm
Change put forth with enthusiasm demonstrates that you believe it is a good move for your business. If you lack enthusiasm, then you cannot expect your team to be excited or even interested.
You should be “won over” to the change and not forced grudgingly yourself to embrace it. Once you are sold on the idea, then pitch it to your employees. Believability is essential — do you have that?
Elicit Feedback
You presented your case to your employees and that is that, right? No! What you must do is to allow your employees to ask questions and provide feedback. Give them the opportunity to ask questions immediately as well as later when questions come up.
Your team will more likely support change when you make a clear case for it. They will also come on board if they are allowed to provide some input on how change will be conducted. By eliciting feedback, you demonstrate that you value your employees and treasure their input.
Offer a Blueprint
No changes are made apart from ample preparation. This can mean that you will take the time to offer training classes to teach a new skill or to familiarize your staff with a new product or service. You need to invest in training to ensure that your team is equipped to handle the change.
Offer a blueprint to your staff whereby you will show how the product or service will be instituted, the time frame to follow and the training required. Equip your employees with the necessary tools and they will be armed to carry out their work. Success is within reach!
Evaluate and Discuss
As your new plan is rolled out, you will be evaluating its progress. That means tracking sales and monitoring how your team performs as it moves forward. This will also allow you to intervene as necessary.
Just as you measure the results, you will want to share that information with your employees. By demonstrating how the change improves your business by being more competitive and profitable, you can reassure your employees that the move was and is a wise one.
Transition Considerations
No transition will ever be accomplished without its challenges. How you respond to problems and keep people moving forward says a lot about your managerial abilities. Maintain leadership throughout the rough and tumble, and you will keep your team motivated and finish the transition with success. Fail that and your business could be in a heap of trouble.
