7 Home Improvement Stores

February 24th, 2010 by Matthew C. Keegan | 1 Comment | Filed in Home Improvement

I don’t know what the weather is like where you live, but here in north central North Carolina we’ve seen the snow melt and temperatures surge well into the 50s, reaching 65 degrees over the weekend. A large swath of the country experienced a cold and snow winter, but spring is about ready to bust loose.

Spring is almost here! Time to make a list of stuff you'll need from the hardware store.

Over the coming weeks and months, Say Educate will look at what you can do to help get your yard and home in shape. Tackle the major projects early enough in the season and you’ll be able to spend more time relaxing over the summer, enjoying time with family and friends.

7 Hardware Stores

More than likely you will be making several trips to hardware stores to pick up seed for the lawn, flowers for the garden, and paint for your home. If you decide to take on a larger project you may end up visiting a warehouse to find the best deals on lumber, plumbing, wiring, roofing materials and more. In any case we’ve compiled a list of all of the major hardware stores across America. Yes, most independent stores are now affiliated with national chains, using their collective buying power to bring competitive prices to you.

Good Reasons To Finish Your Christmas Shopping Early

November 9th, 2009 by Matthew C. Keegan | 9 Comments | Filed in Consumer Tips

My mother had a friend who was a consummate Christmas shopper. Unlike some shoppers who started to patronize stores around Thanksgiving, Eileen had her shopping done and presents wrapped early. Before Labor Day!

Christmas cartNot everyone can finish their shopping early nor do they want to. Eileen hated the Christmas season crowds, but loved yuletide. When the holiday season rolled around she merrily celebrated, but avoided the retail hustle and bustle. All of her shopping was done from presents to tinsel.

Black Friday

Many consumers prefer to wait until after Thanksgiving in search of the best bargains of the holiday season. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, traditionally launches shoppers out of the home and into stores, with some of the best deals of the year found at the wee hours of the morning and up until noon.

Retailers use Black Friday as a means to hook in shoppers with loss leaders which are those products sold below cost. By offering a handful of money losing items, they know that they’ll have you in the store long enough for you to pick up other displayed items. And that’s how they make their money.

Economic Woes

This year, a number of retailers are rethinking their strategy as they worry that high unemployment (10.2% in October), a vexed real estate market, and consumer angst will keep people away from their stores. You can’t spend what you don’t have and, with many consumers having reduced credit to work with, the available dollars pie has shrunk considerably.

What this means is that some stores will be holding their Black Friday specials early and often. Sears, for example, says that they are holding Black Friday specials every Saturday in November and December. This means that if you were in a Sears store this past Saturday, you may have noticed some items priced exceptionally low.

Early Shoppers

Sears is finding competition from other retailers namely Best Buy, Dell, Toys ‘R Us, WalMart, and even Saks who are running their own variations on the early sale theme. Indeed, in a recent WalMart survey the retailing behemoth learned that at least 50 percent of mothers expect to have their Christmas shopping done before the Thanksgiving dinner table is set.

Unlike last year when many goods were sold at a loss, expect retailers to carefully manage inventory and control prices. That’s because in 2008 many store owners were caught with excess inventory having stocked their shelves to the hilt or had goods on order when the stock market collapsed in September. Deals will be had in 2009, but don’t expect prices to plummet as we move closer to Christmas Day.

Though my mother has since passed away and Eileen herself moved many miles away, I’m sure that she is still shopping early. After all, when you’re good at finding specials no matter the season, then you can get everything done and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas.

Adv. — No matter who you are buying gifts for this Christmas, you can find what you want online. Visit nBuy to see our In The Home gallery as well as to find helpful party planning ideas!

You Can Save Money On Home Appliances

April 8th, 2009 by Matthew C. Keegan | 1 Comment | Filed in Home Tips

Ask most any homeowner what are some of the most important attributes of their home’s interior and you’ll get comments such as, “the vaulted ceilings in the living room” or “separate dining area with wood trim.” Though the layout of any home is important, there is another factor that weighs heavily on today’s homeowner and that is the home’s appliances.

kitchenWe live in a technological age and it is our appliances which helps us to manage our busy, often complicated lives. No, I’m not talking about sophisticated coffee grinding/brewing machines nor lighting systems which turn on and off as you enter and leave a room. Rather, those major appliances which can add value to our homes, what owners want and what buyers look at when considering a home that is for sale.

Choose Your Appliances Wisely

Carefully chosen, home appliances can last for many years, offering a premium level of service and consumer satisfaction. However, if care isn’t taken when choosing a new refrigeration, dishwasher, oven, stove, washer, dryer or other compact appliance, you could end up with a huge burden perhaps even a major headache.

Consumers today are faced with a tough balancing act when it comes to shopping for new appliances. Many people suffered enormous losses when the stock market crashed last fall and are being watchful when it comes to how they spend their money. Gone are the days of buying without comparing prices; today’s consumers want the best products but they’re insisting on getting the lowest prices.

Comparison Shopping Makes Good $ense

Thanks to the internet, comparison shopping is much easier to do, giving appliance buyers the luxury to look up information about most any brand, narrow their choices and then shop by price, service guarantee, delivery, etc. Besides standard price, these other factors can add to the cost of buying new appliances making it more expensive to have a new refrigerator shipped in then buying one locally.

A case in point: your local retailer or Sears store may charge you a somewhat higher amount for an appliance you could have had shipped in as well as county and state sales tax, but when you compare shipping costs you could see your savings evaporate. Also important to consider it the warranty: who will actually serve your appliance? Will it be “Joe” at the local shop or whomever the national service center decides to send out?

Perhaps the best way to save money on new appliances is to visit your local home store and choose a floor model or select last year’s top seller which has been reduced in favor of a newer model. Regardless of where you choose to buy make certain that your major appliance carries a service guarantee and has a reputation for giving exceptional service for many years to come.
