More Modest Vacation Plans On Tap This Summer

July 1st, 2009 by Matthew C. Keegan | 1 Comment | Filed in Travel Tips

A Mintel study reveals vacationers are embracing the practical while eschewing the expensive.

MontanaFive star vacations are a thing of the past. At least that is the conclusion of a recent Mintel survey which revealed that vacationers this year are more likely to visit with family members and take road trips then they are to head off to the islands or visit some other exotic destination. As the Independence holiday weekend approaches, travelers are hitting the road instead of flying away, reversing a pattern that seemed to take hold when the economy was humming along.

Getting Away, Paying Less

Mintel’s survey revealed that people are still getting away, but they’re looking for ways to save money including staying with friends and family members while away from home, staying closer to home, taking shorter trips and relying upon cheaper forms of transportation. The latter category, transportation, means that many travelers believe driving the family car is their best mode to help them “get there” while cutting back on air travel.

“The recession is undoubtedly making more Americans shop aggressively for travel deals and cut corners,” states Chris Haack, senior analyst at Mintel. “As people try to save money, we see a rising trend towards simpler, more ‘homespun’ vacations. We’ve even seen an increase in zoo and local theme park attendance. People can justify shorter trips with fewer excesses, as long as they still have the opportunity to relax and have fun.”

Simple Stays Seem Important

Most vacationers have cited “rest and relaxation” as their chief reason for getting away. Mintel discovered that having a “high standard of accommodation and facilities” as not being a significant requirement as they travel, perhaps underscoring being satisfied with whatever arrangements they have while traveling as being a priority.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the Mintel survey was this particular revelation – 40% of those surveyed didn’t travel domestically, citing financial reasons for staying put.

Low Airfares? Going Up!

June 26th, 2009 by Matthew C. Keegan | 5 Comments | Filed in Travel Tips

Thursday’s issue of The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) pointed out a trend that travelers need to take note of. In, “After Months of Sales, Airfares Take Off,” the WSJ found that airfares which had been dropping since last summer have likely bottomed out. In fact, a recent survey by Harrell Associates LLC of one hundred domestic air markets found that fares had shot up by 11% in one week alone. Yes, cheap airfares are becoming scarce with further increases expected throughout the summer; if you’re planning to take a flight in the coming months, then locking in a rate now might save you a bundle of money later.

OregonThe most recent increase in fares is due to several factors including a rise in jet fuel costs, shrinking capacity resulting in fewer seats available, and increased consumer demand. Farecast, which is now part of Bing Travel, has noted that for some city pairs airfare has already doubled. The increase seems to have begun right after Memorial Day when airlines’ spring specials came to an end.

Buy Now Or Wait?

So what should you do if you’re planning a trip? Well, if you’re looking to travel this summer then securing a low fare now is advised. But, if you’re planning a trip this fall or over the Christmas holiday, then waiting to book until after Labor Day may be the best approach. Airlines typically roll out fall fare sales during that time, which means you could end up paying less for your flight if you are patient.

Although you likely won’t get the same low fare you may have seen online last month or even last week, you may be able to snag a deal if you keep a few things in mind:

Check the online travel sites – SayFunTravel.com, Expedia.com, Travelocity.com, Priceline.com and Orbitz.com are each worth exploring in order to find and compare low fares.

Visit airline websites – Some airlines post their lowest rates right online, avoiding middlemen in the process. Compare what you find on the internet whether you’re visiting the travel sites or the airline’s website directly.

Don’t forget discount airlines – There are a handful of discount air carriers still in business, offering price advantages on city pairs that the big boys can’t or won’t match. Spirit Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, USA3000 Airlines, and Virgin America are just to name a few. If you’re accustomed to flying one of the legacy carriers, then take a look at discounters to see what they have to offer to you.

Be flexible – If you have some flexibility as to when you can begin and end your trip, then lower fares are still within reach. Choose off peak travel, specifically, those flights which leave during the middle of the week.

Hopefully, the recent run up in prices won’t take hold, resulting in discounts this fall and beyond. Regardless, there are still airline seats available where you won’t have to pay full price – carefully shop and compare to find what you need.

Adv. – Save money on your next trips whether you’re traveling to the beach for flying off to Honolulu, Tokyo or Sydney. SayFunTravel.com offers state guides to help you find places of interest all across the USA as well as information about cruises, car rentals, hotel stays and more.

You Can Save Money On Your Hotel Stay

June 23rd, 2009 by Matthew C. Keegan | 3 Comments | Filed in Travel Tips

Over the next few months vacationers will be hitting the road in a bid to see the country and to get some much needed rest and relaxation. Many travelers will be staying in a hotel for at least part of their trip, a step that can greatly add to the price of a vacation.

MarylandFortunately, hotel stays don’t have to be a budget buster, with some offering a good room rate and complementary breakfast, but only if you shop around. Let’s take a look at some ways you can save money on your upcoming trip:

Call Directly – Although you may be comparing rates online, sometimes the best deal can be had if you call the hotel directly. Hotels often have a wide price range for the same room, offering varying levels of discounts to different travelers. While the internet will sometimes show ways in which you can get a discount, you may find that the best deal can be had by talking to someone directly at the front desk.

Hotel Website – Hotels have some of the most elaborate websites, offering detailed information about rooms, amenities offered, local information and much more. If you find that contacting the hotel directly isn’t giving you the satisfaction you seek, then check the website directly. Some hotels will show you their standard rate which can be reduced if you meet certain eligibility criteria. That criteria can include AAA or AARP membership, military discount, government rate, business discount, etc.

Travel Sites – Have you ever found a rate online through a third party site that was cheaper than what was listed on the hotel’s site or what you were quoted by the front desk specialist? I have. Some of the big travel site such as Orbitz, Priceline, Travelocity and Expedia seem to have among the lowest rates found. Hotels.com, for instance, will give to you a free night if you book ten nights through them. SayFunTravel.com is another site to consider as is Bing.com’s new travel section.

Frequent Stayer – If your stay takes you back to the same place you’ve stayed previously or if you frequently stay at the same hotel chain wherever and whenever you travel, then a club or rewards card may gain you additional discounts. However, don’t rely on just a card to get you a good rate — if you’re a frequent stayer, then just tell them so – hotels love loyal customers and will often reward them with a better rate and/or a room upgrade.

Compare Deals – We recently found a hotel rate that couldn’t be beat, but breakfast wasn’t included in the price. That’s okay with us because right near to the hotel are several places where we can eat. However, when it comes down to amenities and price, if the same price is offered but the amenities are not included, then the “extras” will determine where we will stay.

Hotel rooms are being offered at a discount this summer because fewer travelers are hitting the road. Some discounts are published, while others aren’t. You can find a deal on a hotel room if you comparison shop and employ the methods used above to reap decent savings.
