Typically people just look at the difference in salary while making a job change. But there is a lot more to a job than just the salary. Once you consider all these factors, you would know the difference between a job and a career.

Compare the salary hike with your present job.

Typically people look at the salary jump they would be getting in a new job. At the same time they need to consider the salary hike that they would be eligible for in their present job during their performance appraisal.

In case they are going for a 10% job hike, they need to consider the hike that they may get in their present job. If you have performed well during the year, chances are that you may be getting a much steeper hike than what a new place is going to offer you.

Consider the tenure also.

In the end, job hoppers are not looked at in a favorable light. Employers know that if a person changes jobs at a slight hike in pay, then he will do it again. Such a person does not denote stability. You may not be given positions of power and stability in a company.

There is nothing like stability and seniority in a company. A person who has spent a lot of time in a company always holds an edge over others, no matter how senior they are. This is because he knows more about the company than even they do. Such a person would know all about the ups and downs in that company. This gives a person an upper hand.

Over time, important and responsible positions would be handed over to such a person only.

This means that while changing a job, all these factors should be considered too. This is because it is not just a job. It is a career choice. Your own reputation is based on the number of jobs you change, as well as the reasons you do it for. All this is important as you are designing your career path this way.
